yesterday: i worked. then went with danielle to visit caitlin at her house near PLU. we went to a Louisiana ish restaurant near the school called From the Bayou. it was so cute and neat. i tried caitlin's alligator. i ordered gumbo and jambolaya. fun fun.
then we watched funny dating on demand clips. goldenbanana is funny.

today i went to a Storm basketball game with aubrey. it was fun.
then Azteca. and watched Hotel Rwanda. about this guy who saved 1200 Tutsi people from being killed during the genocide. it was a real good movie. so sad, this stuff. man though, my african history class didn't make this atrocity come alive as much as the movie. it is so awful, i can hardly even comprehend it. all i know is that there are still awful things going on there in africa, maybe not on such a large scale, and a not as quick, but it doesn't matter. such horrible things should not happen. even if it's hundreds of people, those are still people. i wish i could do something. it's not enough to just send food or medical care. something has got to change. but how?

here is just one example:
"On 26 May 2004 dissident elements of the RCD-Goma opposed to the transitional government(18), took control of the city of Bukavu in South-Kivu province. During the following days, until 9 June, when government troops retook the city, these dissident forces subjected the civilian population to systematic human rights abuse. More than 60 people were killed and more than 100 women and girls reportedly raped, including 17 girls aged 13 or younger, some of whom were raped as their parents watched helplessly. One of the victims was only three years’ old. Extensive looting was also committed. The abusive acts of the dissident forces became known popularly as "opération TDF " – "operation [mobile] telephones, dollars, daughters" – because this is what the soldiers demanded at gunpoint after forcing their way into homes."

and how many people heard of this?
why does the world hardly care?
terrorists bomb london. innocent people killed. bad. all over the news. everybody hears about it.

soldiers or whatever they are kill innocent people in congo. bad. not so well known.

well maybe it's because the terrorists are more likely to kill me than some African in the Congo. i guess people are just being normal, worrying about themselves more than others. it's just sort of silly how we pay hardly any attention to some things.

seriously people, we can't complain. we have it soooo good here in America. or should i say the United States. that would probably be more politically correct. people should not worry so much about taxes and how much gas costs and such, when there are so many people that have to worry about whether they are going to be murdered by guerillas. but i know, it is hard. hard not to think about your own life all the time, your own world. it's not like we can always be thinking about the horrible situations people are in. then we'd just be permanently depressed. oh i feel helpless.

Aww Jess! Its true that there are lots of bad things happening in the world. There are many things you can do, though, that can help people. Like volunteering in soup kitchens, or that kind of thing. Perhaps people like us can't totally change our world's problems overnight, but rest-assured the only way we can be helpless is if we let ourselves be so. It is definitly hard to see all the bad things that are in the world, but try not let that overshadow all the good things too. I find myself in a postition where I am tempted to turn inward and feel sorry for myself, but really, what do I have to feel sorry about? Many americans tend to turn inward upon themselves, focusing on what we don't have and the things that we want. You are a good perosn, jess you can make more of a difference than it might seem.
